Every Thread Carefully Chosen
We produce our silk scarves, bandanas, and pocket squares exclusively from pure natural fibers. Every piece bearing the Laqlaq Istanbul signature is crafted from pure materials and finished by hand. Because the material, no less than the design, must be thoughtfully considered.
Pure Silk, Two Different Weaves
We work with two different silk fabrics — each chosen for a specific need.
Silk Twill — Our Scarves and Pocket Squares
Our 90×90 cm scarves and 35×35 cm pocket squares are woven from silk twill. The diagonal weave structure gives the fabric a subtle surface texture, a natural sheen, and the power to carry rich colors.
It's no coincidence that silk twill is the reference fabric for luxury scarves. It's structured enough to hold a knot, substantial enough to drape beautifully, and durable enough to be tied, untied, and worn every day. Our fabric weighs 16 momme — approximately 69 grams per square meter. This is the standard adopted by the world's most established silk houses for their premium scarves: a weight that feels luxurious in hand and can be worn comfortably in three seasons.
On silk twill, colors appear deeper and more saturated. The diagonal weave creates tiny channels on the fabric surface that hold the dye homogeneously and reflect light from different angles. This is why a silk twill scarf looks one way in the morning sun and another in the evening light.
Crepe de Chine — Our Bandanas
Our 50×50 cm bandanas are woven from crepe de chine. This plain weave, made with high-twist yarns, gives the fabric a soft, matte, and subtly textured surface. While silk twill holds its shape, crepe de chine conforms to it. Lighter, more fluid — it offers an effortless drape suited to the nature of a bandana. Loosely knotted around the neck, tied in the hair, or bound to the wrist — however it's worn, the fabric complies.
Crepe de chine also carries color differently. Prints emerge softer, a little more diffused — an effect closer to watercolor than oil paint. For the small canvas of a bandana, this works perfectly.
The Source of Our Silk
We are transparent about this. The world's finest mulberry silk comes from the Zhejiang and Jiangsu regions of China. These regions have the longest tradition of silk production on earth and supply raw material to almost every esteemed silk house, far beyond Europe. Our silk comes from the same source.
What makes a Laqlaq Istanbul piece distinct begins after the silk reaches us. Our scarves are designed in Istanbul, printed in Turkey with reactive dyes that form a permanent bond with the silk fiber, and finished entirely by hand in Turkish workshops. Design, color, craftsmanship — our identity is shaped here.
We say "100% silk" because it truly is. No polyester lining, no synthetic blends, no weighted silk. Pure mulberry silk, dyed with reactive inks, finished without chemical shortcuts.
Hand-Rolled Hems
The most visible sign of quality in a silk scarf is the hem — and we don't cut corners here.
Every Laqlaq Istanbul scarf, bandana, and pocket square is finished with hand-rolled hems — a technique known in the industry as roulotté. An experienced artisan takes the raw edge of the silk, rolls it twice towards the back of the fabric, and secures it by hand with tiny, almost invisible stitches. Finishing a single scarf takes 60 to 90 minutes.
No machine can replicate the resulting hem. Hand-rolled hems have a characteristic softness and slight irregularity — and this is what gives each piece its unique character. The roll is rounder, the stitches finer, the corners — the hardest part to get right — lie crisp and clean without bulk.
When you pick up one of our pieces, look for these:
The roll. Run your finger along the hem. It should feel smooth and consistent, without thick spots or flat sections. The fabric is rolled twice — if you press gently, you'll feel the layers.
The stitches. Flip the scarf over. On the back, you'll see small, evenly spaced stitches made with thread matching the print color. They should be almost invisible on the front.
The corners. This is where mastery shows most clearly. Each of the four corners should be cleanly folded — no puckering, no loose threads, no excess fabric. A well-finished corner lies flat and maintains a sharp 90-degree angle.
Thread color. The stitching thread is matched to the color at the edge of the print; the finish disappears into the design rather than framing it. It seems like a minor detail, but it's precisely these things that distinguish careful work from careless work.
We hand-roll every hem because, for us, there is no acceptable alternative. Machine-stitched hems are faster and cheaper but produce a flat, stiff finish — fundamentally different in both look and feel. A hand-rolled hem is not a luxury embellishment but the minimum standard for a silk piece that deserves to be called premium.
Printing and Color
Our designs are printed using digital reactive dye technology. Reactive dyes form a permanent chemical bond with the silk protein — they don't sit on the surface; they become part of the fiber. This is what gives our prints their depth and ensures colors stay vibrant through years of wear and careful care.
After printing, each piece is steamed at high temperatures to set the dyes permanently, then washed to remove any unbound pigment. Steaming and washing — this two-stage process distinguishes lasting prints from those that fade after a season.
We test every production batch for colorfastness: resistance to washing, light, and rubbing. Our target is between 4 and 5 on the international ISO scale in all categories — the highest level.
What We Don't Use
Some commitments are defined by what you choose not to do.
No synthetic fibers. No polyester, nylon, viscose, modal — none of it. Every Laqlaq piece is pure natural fiber.
No weighted silk. Some manufacturers add metallic salts to silk to compensate for weight lost during processing. The fabric becomes heavier but more brittle and short-lived. Our silk is pure dyed and unweighted.
No machine-stitched hems. Every piece is finished by hand.
No compromise on dye quality. We use only reactive dyes with premium colorfastness ratings. No disperse dyes, no pigment printing, no shortcuts.
Made to Be Used
We don't make our silk pieces to be displayed in a showcase. We make them to be used — to be knotted, draped, folded, tucked into a jacket pocket, tied in the hair, bound to a bag handle. Our chosen materials and methods are precisely for this: silk that feels better with time, hems that last for years, colors that stay true.
Every piece is inspected before it leaves our workshop. Every hem is checked by hand. Every print is compared against our color standards. What reaches you is what we would wear ourselves.
